More Than a Family Vacation

In 2004, my family took a trip that would quietly shape the way I see the world forever.

We traveled to Italy and Sicily with my Nana and Pap - a journey that, at the time, felt exciting and special… but looking back now, I realize it was something much deeper. It was their dream. A return to where their story began.

We explored some of the most iconic places in Italy. The dramatic cliffs and sparkling coastline of the Amalfi Coast. The ancient ruins of Pompeii, frozen in time. The energy and history layered into every corner of Rome. We stood in awe of Mount Etna, a reminder of how powerful and alive the earth can be.

But the moment that has stayed with me all these years wasn’t at a famous landmark. It happened in a small Sicilian town called Villarosa - where both of my grandparents’ families were from.

When we arrived in our small black shuttle van, something unexpected happened. Word spread quickly through the town, and people began to gather. One by one, they asked if we were the LaQuatra family. Strangers who somehow already knew us. It felt surreal - like stepping into a place where we belonged, even though we had never been there before. We weren’t tourists in that moment. We were family.

Our relatives welcomed us into their home with a warmth that can’t be manufactured. What followed was a long, beautiful meal that stretched for hours - filled with food, laughter, stories, and connections that didn’t need translation. Time seemed to slow down in the best possible way.

My grandparents walked the same streets their parents once did. They stood in front of the homes where their families had lived. They visited the mausoleums where generations before them were laid to rest. There was something incredibly powerful about watching them reconnect with a place that had lived in their hearts for so long. They even brought home small pieces of that history - tangible reminders of where they came from.

I don’t think my Nana or Pap stopped smiling the entire time we were there. There was a sense of peace, pride, and completeness in their expressions that I didn’t fully understand at the time - but I do now.

That day wasn’t about sightseeing. It wasn’t about checking something off a list. It was about identity. About roots. About honoring the people and places that came before us. All these years later, that memory still feels just as vivid. It’s one of those moments that settles into your soul and never really leaves.

That trip taught me something I carry into every journey I plan and every experience I value.

Travel isn’t just about where you go.

It’s about what you feel when you’re there. It’s about the connections you make - whether with people, places, or your own past. It’s about the stories that unfold in the most unexpected moments.

And sometimes, the most meaningful experiences aren’t the ones you see in guidebooks.

They’re the ones that bring you home… even when you’re thousands of miles away.

That trip to Italy & Sicily wasn’t just a vacation.

It was a reminder that the most priceless part of travel isn’t the destination - it’s the memories that stay with you long after you return.

Life is short. Book the trip.
